I've always felt in general that Ghibli movies tend to be part of a story. Nothings ever finalised, we don't usually get a full history of the characters, we see a new chapter of the characters life. For example, in spirited away we see Chihiro moving house and acting very childish. She goes on a journey and comes out of it a much more matured person with a different outlook on life. This is where it ends. What happens next is anyones guess, but we see the moment of significance.
