@hajune Bragg later claimed that Elvis was at the studio when they recorded, but that's just one of his stories. Elvis did visit the penitentiary later on and may have met Bragg, but not the way Bragg told the story. Consider that two of the Prisonaires had 99 year sentences and the both were released before Bragg. Not a trustworthy guy.
@hajune That story is a crock. The song was written by Robert Riley, Johnny Bragg, and Buddy Killen. Riley and Bragg were both prisoners; I don't know who Killen was. Johnny Bragg (who made up stories as he went along) was the lead singer of a group called the Prisonaires (Tennessee State Penitentiary) who recorded this song, while still incarcerated, on June 1 1953. It was released in July of that year.
This song was written by a prisoner who was inspired by a young boy who would visit his uncle who was in the same cell. That young boy became friends with him and encouraged him to write music because he seemed to have a lot of talent to do so. After he was released he wrote this huge hit( Words were from his prison experience in prose) The young boy who encouraged him was a fellow named Elvis Presely. The story is from Paul Harvey's, The Rest Of The Story.
