Joan Baez & Indigo Girls ~ THE WATER IS WIDE ~

"The most devout fans of Joan Baez expressed disappointment in the early 60s when, album after album, her producer (and Vanguard Records head) Maynard Soloman did not include "The Water is Wide" one of the most-beloved songs in the folk canon, on any of Joan`s LPs, despite the fact that it was a regular entry in her concert set. Years later: "We sung this one together many times. Amy usually took the bass part, until I said, I can do that, because I could hit the low note as well as she could. It`s probably baritone. It`s an ancient song and together we create a reasonance profund and delicious and deep as can be."

  • I wonder who is playing the lead guitar part -- awesome.

  • This is a great version of one of my favorite songs.

  • My Mom sung me this song in the early fifties. The truth.

  • @1950BobbyF ~ Although I have never met Joan Baez I have admired Joan for many years now. In 1968 I marched with her in Santa Monica, California ~ protesting Vietnam and in the Fall of 1971 I was fortunate enough to have seen her in concert in Long Beach, California. She is a woman with an extraordinary amount of personal conviction that issues of peace & civil rights are noble causes, worthy of commitment and sacrifice. Joan Baez is not only a wonderful singer, she is my hero, for alll time.

  • @MrRonnieG - this is one very cogent post. thank you for your comments & opinions, especially as they ring so true.

  • I would love to have heard her in her prime sing this beautiful song solo. Too bad, oh too bad!

  • I suspect there are still many people, familar with Joan Baez, who do not still realize how much she cared for Bob Dylan. During 1963 they were together just about all the time but it was always obvious that Bob was not interested in Joan as she was in him. I always thought that Joan looked at Dylan as both the man who could lead the free world in a search for peace & civil rights AND the man who could guide her on a personal journey thru life. How many of us have experienced a one way love?

  • Awesome I have been in love with Joan for 50 years now I would love to have a cup of coffee with her and hear her stories
