@TheChickenSpeaks i left this comment a YEAR AGO, so i don't really remember the context...but i'm pretty sure i knew about universal jurisdiction. My complaint was that I didn't see them actually being set free.

It is a misconception that no one has jurisdiction in this case, for they are actually held to universal jurisdiction. The nations of the world reserve the right to take action against acts of piracy, genocide, torture, etc. committed in international waters, as these are considered to be crimes against humanity, and nations thus have a moral obligation to prevent them and take action against the perpetrators. You can Google "Universal Jurisdiction" for more information.

just kill them all on sight they will get the message

Pirates are recently learning that what they thought is international waters no juristiction is incorrect, by boarding a vessel held by a nation is said vessel is recaptured by that military then the pirates can be detained under that countries law, if not the russian way works best, international water one shot back of the head who can complain.

i bet if they had one guy with an assault rifle on the ship the pirates would just turn around, because they wouldnt want to risk it. to much danger for the reward.
