what to do when all sophisticated communication devices fail in an emergency? DCERN, the District of Columbia Emergency Radio Network, is a grassroots emergency communication network that covers DC's neighborhoods simply by having volunteers all tune to the same channel on cheap walkie-talkies and relay messages. Just make sure you've got plenty of batteries on hand and you can still share vital information!

  • see my other tips on how you can use cell phones wisely...

  • You're right, which is why DCERN has joined with a nationwide ham radio group (I introduced them to each other).

  • lol ya dump them and get a ham radio and get your license and really stay in contact but its ok for around town or up the street but even the walkie talkies are better then cell phones because everyone just runs to thier cell phones when something happens

  • That is great for a small area but I do not think it will work in DFW 40 miles +. Dump the cell, get a Ham rado

  • Great idea. If my parents can't learn to use twitter, I know they can use a walkie talkie. Thanks for the tips.
