Introducing Belgium's Rudest Export ....

Deep in the heart of rural Buckinghamshire, the gentile, picture-postcard hamlet of Westlington Green is home to one of Belgium's lesser-known exports. But that's set to change - because once you've encountered chef and restaurant-owner Frederic Desmette, it's blatantly obvious that once met, he's impossible to forget - and that he's definitely, undoubtedly from Belgium.

Frederic's charming ivy-clad restaurant appears to be the quintessential rustic English countryside eatery, but glance up at the La Chouette sign with its owl motif, (Frederic has a thing about owls), and you begin to realise that Frederic has claimed his corner of this British village as his own Belgian outpost. And he's made a great success of it too his restaurant has attracted rave reviews from leading restaurant critics and boasts a loyal following from far and wide.

It's not that he doesn't like England or its inhabitants, - far from it, he loves living here - it's just that he's not that impressed by our food, or for that matter with how the country's run, or by the weather. and he's not slow at voicing his opinions, which are relentless, hilariously delivered and cover every subject under the sun, regardless of whether or not you care to hear them. You get fine food and insults in equal measures, says one respected food guide. He can be both charming and rude, but his cooking is wonderful and you get a cabaret too. He's as uncompromising as ever.

  • Fantastic chef, great food, and lovely setting. Would recommend to any couple looking for a romantic evening.

  • @tinyhaynes There are French people in Belgium...

  • @squealslikeapig

    European slang....

If you said the words chav or described something as bloody you would get some really fucking weird looks in the US of A.

I know its normal and common where you live though.

  • Its always a difficult choice, Mac Donalds or La Chouette.. Mac Donalds or La Chouette. You just cant get chicken nuggets at La Chouette though.

  • He makes out he's this beligerant, chauvinistic, macho alpha male, when all the time he's getting excited about pink sauces and little baby mice. Really he's a sensitive, modern man with an extremely well developed feminine side. His food's bloody good and Mum's love him (even though he's more likely to be interested in your husband...!)

  • he threatened to fix my broken leg with his crowbar (Betty?). Brilliant man.

  • Belgian? Isn't that a failed Frenchman?

  • Well what can i say the only gay in the village has made it onto the internet.

  • Whatever you do, DON'T MENTION VEGETARIANS!

Love this guy... puts a new ingredient in the recipe... " 1 x Belligerent Belgian "

Fantastic, recommended to anyone who thinks they can out smart him... no chance!

  • Yesterday I dared to enter his restaurant (I'm dutch)... we had a fantastic evening, with loads of jokes about Belgium and the Netherlands. A very amical belligerent Belgian. :) Santé et bon appetit!
