Middle-aged Gerald Kingsland advertises in a London paper for a female companion to spend a year with him on a desert island. The young Lucy Irving takes a chance on contacting him and after a couple of meetings they decide to go ahead. Once on the island things prove a lot less idyllic than in the movies, and gradually it becomes clear that it is Lucy who has the desire and the strength to try and see the year through.

Some people thought that Amanda Donohoe would be the next Helen Mirren. It didn't work out.

CASTAWAY!! I cant believe its on youtube! I used to stay up late when i was a kid to watch this movie, i loved it!! I havent seen this in about 23 years! Thank You for uploading this :)

@mcqueen5 Did you have a chat with Reed? What was your impression of him if anything? I know that he was in bad shape in the Seventies, director Sergio Sollima (Revolver 1973) said that Reed was fine to work with till the early afternoon, then it became increasingly difficult because of his alcoholism. Some workers from the set wanted to kick Ollie's ass at the end but Sollima protected him but telling them a false date for the last shooting day. I wonder how he was during Castaway.
