True, but to say that you must vote to those who would not do so otherwise is perhaps a disservice. I think thats what John Stossel was trying to argue.

That was the original point of the ELECTORAL COLLEGE. People would vote for "electors" from each state equal to the number of representatves that they have from each state. The problem today is that the names of the candidates who the electors promis to vote for is shown on the ballot, instead of the actual electors, who the founding fathers intended to be the most respectable and inteligent people from that state.

I think the direct election of leaders is important but democracy is just one part of the mix, free speech, checks and balances and an armed citizenry who can defend or destroy the US government are equally important. And, I don't buy the if you don't vote don't complain rhetoric.
