Apologies, previous comment removed due to typo, - is = isnt - developer & free are commonly confused as being the same edition, not the case as you have backed up, cheers

The Free Edition doesn't seem to allow you to register your own domain name. Anyone know what's up with that?

The reason they don't let you register a domain name for a free edition is to avoid people using other customers domains as domains can only be tied to a single account and the free edition is designed for development only.

As pointed out by ericstahl the technology is free to paying customers using Enterprise and Ulimited Editions

Minor clarification... The Free Edition is not for development only. You can deploy an app to 100 users for free on this Edition.

If you already have a salesforce account that is either Enterprise or Unlimited Edition, you already have Sites. Enterprise Edition customers get 500,000 page views/month for free. Unlimited Edition customers get 1,000,000 page views/month for free. If you dont have an salesforce account, sign up for Force platform Free Edition and get 100 users and 250,000 page views/month for free.
