Most applications are hidden in the form. There are several obvious kicks, but most postures also include a kick or leg attack.
very few people can still teach tai chi as a combat art, but with a qualified instructor and lots of practice you should be adequately competent for self defense in 5 to 7 years.
Don't be like me. Lazy people never go beyond basic exercises. ;)
