Indian security officials say Pakistani rangers violated a ceasefire agreement along the international border in northern India. The gunfire lasted for about three hours.

On Wednesday, India's Border Security Force accused Pakistani rangers of violating a ceasefire agreement in India's Samba district.

According to the Border Security Force, the Pakistani army opened heavy fire with machine guns at the Ballad post.

A local villager describes the heavy artillery exchange.

[Iqbal Singh, Witness]:
"At around 4:30 in the morning the firing started. At first there was heavy firing of medium machine guns, and half an hour later, the frequency of firing came down."

The Border Security Force also fired back at the Pakistani Rangers.

There were no reports of injuries.

The exchange of fire lasted for about three hours.
