This is how an engine with bad 8th cylinder sounds. After the short video, I did a compression test. All cylinders showed near equal compression of ~400-450 PSI except #8 which showed 110PSI.

  • What was the problem? Mines doing the same smoke & miss. Codes come up #8 miss fire.

I never found out. If you get the same issues, I would suggest a direct drop in. Don't waste your money and time on mechanics to diagnose unless you do it yourself.

  • I found out what was causing the bad compression in my engine on cylinder 8.

I pulled the head off and found that the piston crown was hitting the top of the cylinder wall and had worn a large divot halfway around the entire cylinder bore.

Removed the engine and had #8 sleeved and all holes punched out .20 over.

  • its a ford thing

  • Mine is doing the same, even the same cylinder. I brought it to an independent Ford shop and they did a compression test to confirm as I don't have a diesel compression tester.

I'll be pulling the head off myself to determine the cause and possible repair.

They quoted me $11,000 to install a reman. engine.

  • @mikefrombg Gas motors we have done. My racecar has been threw a few..Hes done a few tractors and they are still running its the electrical stuff that gets me. If you rev it up after about 2 grand it quits smoking. Doesnt smell ike its burning any oil and no white in the oil if it was a head or gasket. Holds good oil psi. He put a new injector harness on it and it did help it some. I told him to check the injector orings and he didnt and he would send them to check them.

very complicated engine. it could be 100ts reasons. it may be injectors, electrical problem, oil pump, fuel system... but if you get to the point where it's a cylinder (by compression test and leak down test).. for these engines is always wiser to do a new reman dropin.. unless you are mechanic and you take the project as a hobby. its alot of labor and once it has gone bad it will be very likely to go bad again.

  • Got a question...my dads is doing about the same deal...its only got 130ish on it a but it starts good and sounds decent just blowing white smoke and dont run to great.
