Unlike Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show," the Cavett show used a new tape every night instead of taping the same one over and over, which is why the Carsons looked muddy while the Cavetts looked pristine even on the first broadcast. The contrast had to be seen to be believed as you'd flip channels back and forth.

What a class act.... the greats are all gone now....

So that means SOMEONE is dedicated to preserving these tapes. Either that or the tapes were just well stored/taken care of.
