Pics of old Mamou from 1900 through 1952. In 1908, C.C. Duson facilitated an auction for the sale of lots ($50.00 ea.), on the corner of Chestnut & 7th. street , after announcing that the Southern Pacific Railroad would build a branch line from Eunice to Mamou in 1909. The Rock Island Railroad would follow in 1911 by building a road from Eunice to Alexandria. John Lahaye & Ulyses Pierotti built the Rock Island depot on west Main Street. The town of Mamou was incorporated on January 11, 1911. Mamou acquired telegraph service that same year. Population in 1911 was 250. The first Mayor was Adolph Dugas. By 1920 (pop. 603 - Prohibition), Dr. Frank Savoy Sr. had arrived and began his medical practice. Mamou acquired water works and it's first brick high school (now the elementary bldg.) in 1922 ( Louisiana's Gov. passes a law in 1921 outlawing the speaking of French on school property) , & electricity in 1926 (Great Depression 1929). In 1936 Mamou built it's second brick school (now the MHS) and in 1938 the town of Mamou acquired gas (pop. 1360). During WWII ( Nov. 5 1944) Mamou suffers from the Great Fire which destroyed every building/business on the west side of 6th street. By 1950 (pop. 2753) , Dr. Frank Savoy Sr. had his Mamou hospital under construction.

  • What a fantastic harmony of picture and sound. Would you please tell me the name of the song and band that plays first?

  • @DwydAshquin : The name of that tune is "Rock Iskland Line" by Sonny Terry & Brownie Mcghee.

  • I'll watch this again, thanks for posting it. I'll see some of you at the Mamou "Cajun" Music Festival soon.

  • @jlm12b : I'll be there also. Have fun. Perhaps you will play a tune somewhere around Mamou while you are there?
