Glenwood Springs Colorado German Shorthaired Pointers
Ted Hoff trainer/owner of http://CottonwoodRanchandKennel.com near Crawford, Colorado works with two German Shorthair Pointers, describing this incredibly athletic breed.

History of the German Shorthaired Pointer

Records state that the German Shorthaired Pointer stems from German Prince Albrecht zu Solms-Brauenfels' effort to create the ultimate all-purpose hunting dog. Solms-Brauensfels owned schwiesshunds (Bloodhounds) and Pointers imported from England, thus the basis for the German Shorthaired Pointer. In the 1900′s, German Shorthaired Pointers were imported into the USA.

  • I use the GSP for Boar hunting.

  • @916stevely nothing to be proud of....I would never put mine in that type of danger. I hunt archery wild hogs in Texas every year, each to his own..

  • @ColoradoDogTrainer Yes but I love my GSP as much as you. Plus, I use kevlar vest. I just disagree with the general feeling that the GSP is only good for upland hunting. I have seen GSP hunt bear as well. If you look up the history of the GSP you will find that the dog was designed to for multi-purpose. Thus, I am very proud that my one GSP can boar hunt, upland hunt, and duck hunt.

  • @916stevely @ColoradoDogTrainer I live in a state where it is illegal to hunt any big game with a dog other than lion, and I am well aware of the history of the gsp, as many of the l german hunting dogs used for everything. As I said, to each his own.

  • beautiful dogs and great video!

  • @lilcoz08 Thanks Lilcoz!

  • Everyone that buy's a GSP should have to watch this video first.

  • Great video! When I get home from my deployment I'm looking at getting a GSP. Wife wants a Lab, but I really want an athletic breed that has a good hunting instinct. I want to have a great family companion that wants to go everywhere with me! Keep up the good videos! Any specific training tips for GSP's would be cool to see as well!
