So I need to make sure that when I practice the traditional grip that my left wrist should be the only thing moving, while refraining from the urge to include my wrist?

I learned traditional placing the stick on the soft spot between the cuticle and the knuckle. Does it really matter cause ive spoken to people from a well know university with a well known drumline. I know in core style music they place it on the cuticle but is it necessary or is it preference?
