Die wichtigste heutige Funktion des Saluang Darek als Instrument zum Dendang / Gesang (Minangkabau, traditionelle Vokalmusik),ist es zu begleiten. Darüber hinaus dient es auch für private Unterhaltungen, für Community-Mitglieder, dabei wird es einzeln gespielt, als Ausdruck der Gefühle, die nicht an Dritte übermittelt werden können. The Saluang is a traditional music instrument of the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra, It is made of thin bamboo or "talang" (Schizostachyum brachycladum), with only 4 holes. The dimension of Saluang is 3-4 cm in diameter and 40-60 cm in length. It is related to the Suling of other parts of Malay archipelago.
Saluang player can play that music instrument without interrupting for taking breath from start to end of song. They have developed special breathing techniques in blowing that instrument without stopping for breathing in ( Mampasalisiahan Hangok).
In terms of shape, Saluang Darek musical instruments include the type of end blown flute (do not have the tongue). The main functions of Saluang Darek as a tool to accompany sang (Minang vocal music).
