http://www.ted.com Aaron Huey's effort to photograph poverty in America led him to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the struggle of the native Lakota people -- appalling, and largely ignored -- compelled him to refocus. Five years of work later, his haunting photos intertwine with a shocking history lesson in this bold, courageous talk from TEDxDU.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate. • I am Oglala. My grandmother was born on the rez and moved later to Seattle. We are from Wounded Knee and Rosebud. What you are doing moves me and makes me both happy and sad. To see the conditions my family lives in to this day moved me to tears in the middle of class when I first discovered your photographs and this speech. But to see a Wa'sichu devoting his life to our cause makes my heart soar. You are not a wa'sichu as your skin leads us to believe. You are a brother. Thank you.

  • @CultureJamtheNWO Like these peoples and many cultures before us, this is spawn of Class Hierarchy and the Economy as we see fit. To say Poor people stay poor or choose to live that way is disgusting. Do you think that a child born onto a Reservation, growing up in that lifestyle chooses to live that way? It's all they know, so it's their fault? If it's all you know, is it wrong? You pass judgement ignorantly, is it wrong? If all you know is ignorance towards your fellow man is it wrong?

  • After the Abrahamic 'Faiths' Capitalism is the Biggest Scam in Human History.

  • The USA is the most hated nation on history. I hate you too.

  • @sillyhappyguy ..of course the indigenous had input on the constitution ! and oh how I WISH that were true for all indigenous tribes to be "sovereign nations" ..but the sad fact is is NOT true!!

  • @914light

one thing, did the natives have any input on the constitution? We were "Sovereign Nations" NOT A PART OF THE united states.

  • well Aaron...there is a simple solution that can left the people on Pine Ridge up. It's called farming !!...OF HEMP...!! they should be able to grow what they want on their own land !!! Hemp farms would create jobs and trade with outsiders !! clothing, shoes, building materials, paper, soap, food can all come from Hemp.. as it restores the earth !

after all your constitution was written on Hemp paper !! so if you really want to help..Hemp is the answer !! research why this is NOT happening !

  • How can it be that at the place where everything ended now is such poverty. People who was responsible for that had to give to these american natives much more than they have for what they done to them!

  • Just... thank you Aaron Huey's. With love, peace and respect. Thank you.

  • Thank you Aaron Huey's
