Edakka is the one and only drum in the world which can produce rythm and melody(vocal notes). This video is performed by the talented and one of the very very rare artist named Mr.Subrahmanian Peringode of Kerala state South India
Yes the instrument is similar to the talking drum. Am not very sure is the talking drum has a snare stretched across the head. Thanks for sharing the info on the edakka in Tamil literature. Cheers
What does 'Perungodar' mean idakka is a very ancient percussion instument , frequently mentioned in ancient Tamil classical literatures, but gone into oblivion in Tamilnadu. It is quite heartening to see that Kerala still nurtures many of the ancient Tamil cultures. In Chola period inscriptions we find Idakakka is played as an accompaniment to Thevaram singing in Siva Temples. Thanks rajeshachuth. Muthukumaraswamy

Idakka is a dravidian instrument used solely for worship of gods and godesses. But not used by tyagaraja or swati thirunal .
