This is not your usual Nail Art Tutorial but a documented test on how to clean silver. In addition to my love for nail art, I also love jewelry. Part of having jewelry is keeping the pieces clean. The ordinary jewelry cleansers never seem to clean my silver pieces very well. So, I searched YouTube and discovered many Tubers using baking soda as an alternative cleanser.

As a natural skeptic, I wanted to see if it really worked.

I grabbed a pair of my grungiest tarnished silver earrings and went forward to see if I could restore them to their original state of 'shininess' using only baking soda, toothpaste & hot water in a foil lined plastic bowl.

This slideshow/video documents the entire process. If you want to find out if baking soda can truly clean silver, then keep watching!

Enjoy! There are final pics included at the end for comparison.

  • I use lemon juice, although don't use this method on polished rocks, cause it will eat the polishing coat off the rocks. Just let the silver jewelry sit in the lemon juice over night and it will eat off anything on the jewelry.

  • @PostiveMindBodySoul Thanks for your tip!

  • That's freaking amazing! I will be trying it. I'm really glad you tried it one something that had diamonds in it cause I have a silver necklace and I wasn't sure the baking soda thing would be safe with the gem (I'm pretty sure it's fake but all the same) Thanks!

  • @lairelithoniel I'm glad you found this vid helpful -- good luck with your necklace!

  • Wow!! What a huge difference. Pretty earrings!

  • @OUGT12 Thanks -- I was so amazed, too. :)
