Church actually is a spiritual foundation of Spanish people and Spanish culture. Those who attack Church - attack Spain itself. Franco won because Republic persecuted Christians and collaborated with Stalin - who was 1000 times worse criminal than petty Mussolini. This atheist persecutions gave Franco's military rising a Spain-wide support. Republic collapsed under the weight of her own crimes and incompetence.

Franco won because he was aided and abetted by two regimes never surpassed in the dark lamentable catalogue of human crime. The Church persecuted Spaniards for centuries and backed every Fascist piece of filth from Croatia, to Italy, to Spain. They deserved all they got. All the churches in Spain weren't worth the life of one Republican.

Franco won because half of Spain supported him, because nationalists were united around him, because Republic lost any support of Spanish Christians and persecuted Church.
