NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Vee Jay 643) Out of Los Angeles, this early Standells release was recorded in December of 1964 and released in January of 1965. The session for this 'Garage Band meets Phil Spector' was held at Hollywood's Gold Star Studio with SONNY BONO at the helm as producer and arranger. He can also be heard in the vocal mix.

  • Thanks again for posting this. It's so great to hear the records that have been talked about for years but are rarely heard. I'm sure the spoken portion was Mr. Bono's idea. It starts out better than it ends, no?

  • @lesgore54 So I'm not the only one who enjoys this tune just up until the spoken section. I have to admit that it does put the kibosh on the anticipated and expected building 'of the Wall Of Sound'.

  • Actually it was Cher who sang on the b.g. vocals. At the time, Sonny was a protégé of Phil Spector and used many of the same techniques as Phil. This is not very representative of the Standells sound; it was Sonny's sound. The Standells did not even play their instruments on it. "The Boy next Door" is a classic example of the Standells being paired up with the wrong producer, which was the case until they signed up with Ed Cobb who allowed the Standells to be the Standells.
