72 years after it was stolen by Nazis, the 17th century oil painting Portrait of a Musician Playing a Bagpipe is being returned to its rightful owner. NTDs Yukichi Negishi has more.
STORY:
This $60,000 oil-on-panel painting is being returned to the Estate of Dr. Max Stern, who was a Jewish art dealer in Germany.

Portrait of a Musician Playing a Bagpipe was a part of Sterns collection until 1937 when Nazis stole it from him.

Nazis forced Dr. Stern to sell his collection of over 200 paintings during World War II. He then fled to Canada to avoid further persecution. He died in 1987.

Now, the Holocaust Claims Processing Office (HCPO) and U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) tracked down the missing painting to an art gallery in Manhattan.

[Peter J. Smith, ICE Special Agent]:
Its been in various museums in Europe then it was sold in the United States. It came in through JFK Airport. We received information that it was here locally. And once we identified it, we advised the art museum was there and the museum was very interested in it.

The painting now will go to Concordia University in Montreal, one of Dr. Sterns art beneficiaries.

Yukichi Negishi, NTD, New York.
