i think the problem was simply she was listening to the call through the speakers and it was feeding back through the mic that was placed too close, and the echo cancellation couldn't deal with it properly so it canceled part of her own speech intermittently until it "adapted" and just opened up the speakers so it just fed back unrestricted..
