There was great expectation in this first match between these world chess champions.
At that time, 33 years old Anatoly Karpov was the world chess champion since 1974 when Bobby Fisher declined to defend his title. Then Karpov defeated Victor Korchnoi in the world chess championships of Baguio 1978 and Merano 1981 and won a lot of prestigious chess tournaments.
Gary Kasparov, 21 years old, was a child prodigy who won important chess tournaments and soon became a great chessmaster. In the candidates matches, he defeated Alexandr Beljavsky, Victor Korchnoi and the former world chess champion Vassily Smyslov.
The match was anulated by Florencio Campomanes, president of FIDE, when the the score was 5-3 in favor of Karpov.
Dos grandes del ajedrez. Difícilmente dos jugadores se apartaran tanto del resto. Hasta que Anand no sea derrotado por una nueva generación, estos dos seran los mejores de la historia.

@Alessandr0Tronca I think Karpov was stronger at that time to be honest

@SongsofInnocence Read the book "Unlimited Challenge" by Kasparov, you'll know why. It was all political, it was clear Kasparov would have crushed Karpov.

Karpov was quite a monster in this match. Going 5-0 against Kasparov until the frail body started to fail him.

Me encanta el juego diagonal, artístico y letal de Karpov. Nadie le quita mérito a Kasparov, un Gran Maestro desde luego.
