As far as I know, David Letterman was first introduced to most Americans back at the 1971 Indianapolis 500... as Chris Economaki.Just a curiosity.

I believe David Letterman at the time was also doing a local talk show for the ABC affiliate in Indianapolis, besides the weather forecast.
He must have been around 20 or 21 years of age.

Yep! The voice says it all! A very young David Letterman interviews Mario! Letterman was working for WLWI Channel 13 (an ABC station in 1971) doing the weather that year.
