Nice video! I went all the way from Australia on a 7 week holiday top travel the west side of America. When I went on this the bridge had been burnt so I missed out on the best part.

The 487 was almost "dead square" back in 1990 when I was out there. Check my vids of it climbing to Cumbres from Chama and you'll "hear what I mean".

@FluesheetMcFajabahn probably because they're 85 years old and have to climb a 4% grade everyday for 5 months a year for the last 40 years.

I read someones blog who made a list of the top 10 most dangerous railroads.... This was #4.... That's absolutely ridiculous.

Eh, I would not say that particularly. Perhaps worked as they were designed to maybe? Just remember, Ross Rowland isn't an employee there so there is a step in the right direction lad!

Because they are constantly getting beat to death.

Why do almost all the K class mikados sound like they're all out of sqaure? I know this could be the result of hooking the engine up so much it sounds like a three-legged horse, but even when starting out in full gear, they still sound out of square. Anybody got an idea?

The Cumbres & Toltec was bought from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in sometime between 1968 and 1970. The operations are completely separate, however, most of the freight equipment on the line is still lettered for historical purposes for the D&RGW, not the current owners the C&TS. The engines and passenger cars are labeled for Cumbres & Toltec, while the freights are lettered for D&RGW.
