Solo acoustic guitarist Jim Goodin author of DADGAD Encyclopedia, an instructional guitar book/CD about the open tuning DADGAD published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc., designed for the intermediate to advanced guitarist, talks about his book and performs music from it. DADGAD Encyclopedia includes 15 advancing pieces in notation/tablature, major/minor scale exercises, easy to advanced chord charts, tuning "how-to's" and Goodin's thoughts on exploring the Celtic influenced harp-like guitar tuning. The accompanying 15 track CD was recorded at Will Ackerman's Imarginary Road Studio.

  • the audio was recorded via the on-camera mic on the digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix. Though I was reasonably close there is still some noise. Thanks for viewing. Good day.

  • DADGAD is not a good tuning for Classical (nylon)

it's much better on steel string. Nylon loses too much tension in the strings.

It's also used a lot more in Folk music than for translating Classical pieces.

The Bach Cello snippet sounds pretty bad here; playing Baroque music still needs technique no matter what tuning.

See Pierre Bensusan for DADGAD mastery.

  • SPEAK TOO MUCHHHHHHHHHHhh play more ...

  • I was unimpressed with this piece. I think it is inferior to the Duarte arrangement played by classical guitarists. It did however get me thinking about playing Bach in DADGAD. I have arranged the Sarabande and Double from BWV 1002 (trancribed from Bm to Am) and I think it works well in this tuning. Does anyone else play Bach in DADGAD?

  • More power to you for putting out a book and having it successfully published. That can be an accomplishment within itself.

But I personally found the book to be very unsatisfying, and a very watered down version of what DADGAD could be. That's just me. Maybe somebody else can get some benefit from it.

  • Very nice, but not what I personally would expect from a guitar tuned to DADGAD. Fine for a classical guitarist who would like to try his hand at this tuning though.

  • Bach?

  • Hi Jim here is another open tuning that I use dadadd
