Patch & Max

Patch turned 5 months of age on Friday....and I was working on the yard and mulching. The weather was so nice I brought out our Parrot (macaw) to enjoy the weather with us. Patch had a good time with Max!

@mlo21771 funny you should mention a barking bird.....I have, too often, heard her barking and thought my dogs were outside and called for them to come in, only to find out it was Max, mimicking their barks when they are outside.

I really hate it when people, who are obviously unknowledgeable make ignorant comments. If you don't know animals, don't comment using only your silly little opinion with no facts to back it up. Animals are extremely smart and KNOW how to take care of themselves. That bird would take out that dog if he felt even the slightest bit threatened. I only say this because as a dog and macaw owner, I know the interaction between the two.

Your parrot is beautiful and the dog is too cute.

@MsBlaird Thank you so much for your comments. I agree 100%. If you don't understand the interaction, or you think I'd post a video of mistreatment of ANY animal....you're crazy! =) I'm a die-hard animal lover - all my pets are rescues....including Max. I suppose the people that don't have harmony in their lives can't relate to a home that lives in harmony, either. Again, thank you for your comments =) Happy New Year!

@Matsikay: Yes I DO think the bird would get away if it could, you said yourself she can't fly, so where is she to go? She is backed up to the edge and her body language says she wants to get away, but if she turns around the dog goes after her tail, which is NARRATED in the video. I'm not saying she looks scared, just harassed.I stand by my first post! I've seen 1 video where the bird seemed to be having fun. The bird was above eye level of the dog, probably felt less like prey. Just sayin'.

@getaclueu: Max is a very strong, powerful bird, as all Macaws are. There are plenty of ways for her to stop playing if she wanted....and the #1 thing would be to bite Patch. Patch was a puppy, he was playing. Max has had plenty of experience with many dogs...and I just want to tell you, something they all learn right off the bat, regardless of their age is to RESPECT THE PARROT! when Patch was playing with max and he was on the step below max, do you think she 'felt less like prey?'

Just out of curiosity, doesn't your bird need to have his beak and claws cut? I think it could end up being a problem for him ...

@greyhunter13 You are SO right!!! what a powerful beak! If she is done playing and the dogs are not - she lets them know, and believe me, they know when play time is up! I have four dogs....and max can definitely hold her own with each one of them! Typically, only one of them will play with her at a time...it's like some unwritten code.

@ShinyNewRemy thank you for your comments. max plays with all of my dogs - even walks across my shepherd....(well, back when my shep was younger, anyway). she will hang on the door to her cage and play with them, and the dogs will bark at her, and it's funny to watch....but she's not upset and instigates play sessions with them all the time....and fortunately, they usually reciprocate!

Adorable. And to other people, this is exactly how parrots act when they play. If it felt threatened that dog woulda ran away crying.

jeeze that beak needs to be filed down thats unhealthy, i hope you are taking care of you're macaw because they are very beautiful birds.
