Today I joined LVEJO and a super awesome group of folks for a Toxic Tour of Little Village/La Villia. This is just a moment in the tour of various sites, where we were in view of a mountain of coal, at Crawford Coal Plant.
The movement to close Fisk and Crawford is purely political. There are many developers and "community organizations" and politicians ready to pounce on potential real estate in Pilsen in Little Village and once they do, bye-bye Mexicans, hello UIC student, trust fund hipster-posers and artists.
Coal is comprised of carbonized plant matter and trees. Trees! Remember? They're those things environmentalist love to hug. What alternative source of energy do you propose? Nuclear energy perhaps? Japan's recent nuclear crisis demonstrates the grave danger of nuclear energy, so much so that Germany--and Germany loves its industry--has plans to close all its power plants in light of the Fukushima crisis.
