THIS SONG BY THE LEFT BANKE WENT TO # 15 IN 1967.

LYRICS:

I had a date with a pretty ballerina
Her hair so brilliant that it hurt my eyes
I asked her for this dance
and then she obliged me
Was I surprised, yeah?
Was I surprised, no not at all

I called her yesterday
it should have been tomorrow
I could not keep the joy that was inside
I begged for her to tell me
If she really loved me
Somewhere a mountain is moving
I'm afraid it's moving without me

(refrain)
(Instrumental violins)

La la la laaaaaaaaa la

I had a date with a pretty ballerina
Her hair so brilliant that it hurt my eyes
I asked her for this dance
and then she obliged me
Was I surprised, yeah?
Was I surprised, no not at all

And when i wake on a dreary Sunday morning
I open up my eyes to find there's rain
and something strange within says go ahead and find her
just close your eyes yeah
Just close your eyes and
she'll be there
She'll be there
She'll be there

  • The year 2012 is going to blow some minds, there will be a new album by The Left Banke with all original songs. These will be songs that we were going to record but, due to a lot of problems, never got got to do. I hope this time we'll have the chance to show all of you the great music that we became known for, melodic, lyrical and beautifully sung. Yes , Michael Brown will be involved

  • @djtomfinn- Tom- thank you for commenting. You guys have such beautiful music. I can't wait to hear your new album! God Bless you, Ron

  • It's amazing to me how some people don't realize that we were a real group. Back then it wasn't about who wrote what or sang whatever, we were a group G-R-O-U-P. It seems like everyone tries to label it , when in actuality we just worked very hard and had fun at the same time. Everyone of us had equal input,, nobody was a genius or prodigy. Yes we broke up very soon after we formed, but, the real shame is that we had many, many more Renee's and Ballerina's

  • @djtomfinn- thanks Tom for your comments! Take care, Ron

  • I was 10 when I heard this song and I must say it was one of my favs then and now. The 60s were quite a time indeed, but it was not all the "peace and love" stuff many portray it to be. It was also very scary. Vietnam, civil rights marches, demonstrations etc. were heralding changes that would reverberate to the present day. However, this little ditty was a bright spot in all of that turmoil.. Thanks for posting and the jaunt down memory lane.

  • @SgtRock57 - you're very welcome!

  • I'm 14 years old, and this song along with Walk Away Renee have been my favorite songs for the last 2 years! It is absolutely devastating that kids today have no idea what music really is, and when you compare amazing songs like this to songs on the radio today like Lady Gaga and LMFAO is it absolutely appalling!!!!!! "Songs" now shouldn't even be considered songs!!!!! If only people could understand how bad what they are listening to is, the world would be soooooo much better!

  • This song was so magical for me. I was about 10 and so totally in love with this.

  • @djtomfinn I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS EVER WRITTEN, PERIOD. THE LYRICS ARE REALLY POETRY, AND THE MUSIC FITS IT PERFECTLY. IT MAY BE WRONG OF ME, BUT I HAVE ALSO ASSOCIATED THIS SONG WITH PSYCHEDELICS AND INNOCENCE. THE LUSH ORCHESTRAL PORTIONS SOUND LIKE THEY WERE INFLUENCED BY "PEPPER", WHICH IS NO INSULT. I WOULD LIKE TO TELL ME THE NAMES OF ANY OF YOUR SONGS THAT RESEMBLE THIS ONE, AND OFFER YOU MY BEST WISHES AND GRATITUDE FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO MUSIC.

  • @djtomfinn If you never did another thing, what you did would be enough.

  • @djtomfinn : This is good news. There were a number of groups who during the heyday of AM radio that really had talent and the Left Banke was one of them before the FM format appeared.

  • Beautiful music. Kind of personal, too. Your music kind of pulls at my heart strings. I live in a condominium complex called Left Bank and we had a political storm at work which caused alot of problems. People were set up and fired by a less than honest boss. All the women had to walk away because we were being harrassed by sociopathic co-workers and management and the store was shut down. It was like dancing out of hell. Thank you for writing dancing out of hell music.

  • @djtomfinn It can't come soon enough for some of us who grew up listening to this beautiful music!

  • @Toccopolakid Clearly someone with excellent taste!

  • wow kind of sounds like the velvet underground real moody catchy

  • I can't wait to hear the new album! A friend and I sang "Walk Away Renee" at an Irish Pub Open Mic and ALL talk ceased. Everyone loves - and loved - that song.

  • @djtomfinn I can never forget this song and the left bank

  • this is so exciting to have the leftbanks feedback thankyou for the song renee, my nickname got teased a lot about it, but i always had the last laugh i would just hum that tune then walk away singing i'm not to blame you have no idea how many times i had to play it over the next 40 yrs to help me be strong, can't believe that one of you will read this..raine

  • @djtomfinn : I look forward to ANY new music from you guys...and yes, I'm happy to see that Michael will be involved!

  • @ShelbyTN1 ME TOO!

  • wow! A great song

  • Just stopping by to listen again. :)

  • This has got to me one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time - it's got it all - a haunting melody - passion - beautiful lyrics - talented and insightful band members. When I was a teen I would play my 45 rpm of this recording over and over and over. I can still hear Walk Away Rene on the Oldies station now - but they never ever play Pretty Ballerina. I wish they would. Thanks so much for posting this great song!!

  • What an incredibly beautiful song this was and still is, all of these years later!

  • @djtomfinn So do it for cryin' out loud. I'm 50, I haven't got forever ya know.

  • Nobody writes 'em like this anymore. Sad to say...

  • AM radio played their other hit most of the time, "Walk Away Renee", but I like this one the best. I really love the violin solo. Too bad this wasn't a bigger hit. Beautiful song.
