THIS SONG BY THE LEFT BANKE WENT TO # 15 IN 1967.

LYRICS:

I had a date with a pretty ballerina
Her hair so brilliant that it hurt my eyes
I asked her for this dance
and then she obliged me
Was I surprised, yeah?
Was I surprised, no not at all

I called her yesterday
it should have been tomorrow
I could not keep the joy that was inside
I begged for her to tell me
If she really loved me
Somewhere a mountain is moving
I'm afraid it's moving without me

(refrain)
(Instrumental violins)

La la la laaaaaaaaa la

I had a date with a pretty ballerina
Her hair so brilliant that it hurt my eyes
I asked her for this dance
and then she obliged me
Was I surprised, yeah?
Was I surprised, no not at all

And when i wake on a dreary Sunday morning
I open up my eyes to find there's rain
and something strange within says go ahead and find her
just close your eyes yeah
Just close your eyes and
she'll be there
She'll be there
She'll be there

I'm really young, and I didn't know this was an old song until recently...most kids around my age (13-15) wouldn't really like this kinda music but I love it! My grandfather would put it on in the car a lot...and I loved when he did. Its a great song!!!!

This song was used very well as haunting background music in the way cool 1988 movie "Off Limits" about 2 military cops played by Willem Dafoe and Gregory Hines, trying to find an army officer...they think(!)....who's a stone-cold murderer in the middle of the insanity of the Vietnam war. A very under-rated movie. Try to find it and watch it. And, yeah, another great post from rwells47, from someone who lived through the days of this great music. What a great time to grow up. Thanks again man!

When I was in college in the early Seventies, I would kill time between classes by going through bargain bins at a little record store downtown. I could afford only these 25/50-cent albums then, and they all gave me so many hours of enjoyment. I still have the albums all of these decades later: The Left Banke, Keith, The Easybeats, The Innocence, The Grass Roots, Donovan, and more.

Michael Brown (keyboardist and writer/arranger of the two big hits, "Walk Away Rene" and "Pretty Ballerina") was engineered by his father, who was also the producer. The band was built around Michael by the father but the band didn't like Michael (and thought his music not indicative of the band or its sound) and he didn't like the band. He was very shy and the limelight was not comfortable to him. He has done few things over the years. Also see "Montage" and "Stories" for more of Michael Brown.
