This video shows how the Electronic Differential Locker works on my A6 2.5TDI quattro.
It works in conjunction with the ABS system and monitors the wheel spin with the ABS sensors, then the spinning wheels is braked down by the ABS pump, thus transferring torque to the wheels with more traction.
you need to hold a steady throttle to make this system work as it should, if you don't spin the wheels fast enough the brakes won't apply. i had 2:nd gear in this test. it didn't engage at all in 1:st gear (but if you keep the revs higher than idle it will function in first gear too of course)
at 2:54 you can hear the ABS pump building up pressure to brake the wheel.

@kminovski no, it dosn't seem to be any EDS function on the front wheels.
