Asian elephant calf Kenzi at Saint Louis Zoo

Female Asian elephant calf Kenzi will celebrate her two month birthday with her three-generation family on August 24, 2011. This video shows Kenzi exploring her big new world behind the scenes at River's Edge with her mother Rani and grandmother Ellie. Her doting older sisters, Jade and Maliha, love to help take care of Kenzi, and they join in on daily play dates, too. Rani has been very protective of Kenzi from the start and continues to be a caring mother.

The Zoo's elephant care team is slowly introducing Kenzi to her habitats, and once Rani and Kenzi are ready, they will meet their adoring public at River's Edge.

Kenzi was born on June 24, 2011, weighing about 300 pounds. At almost two months old, she now weighs 360 pounds. She is learning a lot every day by watching the other elephants in her family, and she is very quickly mastering the art of using her trunk to sample solid foods. She is the second daughter for mother, Rani, and father, Raja. Raja was the first elephant born at the Saint Louis Zoo in 1992.

It's estimated there are only 35,000-50,000 Asian elephants left in the wild.

The Saint Louis Zoo's commitment to elephants extends to their conservation in the wild. In partnership with the International Elephant Foundation (IEF) and other elephant conservation partners, the Saint Louis Zoo supports Asian elephant conservation efforts in Sumatra and other countries in Asia and Indonesia, as well as African elephant conservation efforts in Kenya through the Northern Rangelands Trust. In the last thirteen years, the Saint Louis Zoo has provided nearly $1,250,000 to conservation that benefits elephants in Asia and Africa.
