Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is a 2008 animated film by the Japanese anime studio Studio Ghibli, written and directed by Academy Award winner Hayao Miyazaki. It is Miyazaki's tenth film for Ghibli. The plot centers on a baby fish in the sea named Ponyo who wants to become a human girl. In pursuing her goal, she befriends a five-year-old human boy, Sōsuke. The film releases in theaters in the US on August 14, 2009.

I wasn't let down at all when I read somewhere about that one scene when Fujimoto flashed a light at an illuminating squid to communicate with it. I finally got the humor in the part where he flinched at the light. I wondered what the squid said? And YES IT DOES need to make sense. For me that is. If I hadn't learned about that scene I mentioned above, I would be staring at that scene like I missed an important line of a joke.

@KousAB10 it doesnt need to make sense. if you search for reason in miyazaki films then you will probably be let down. it is his fantastic once in a lifetime imagination that makes these movies so powerful

I watched this movie illegally for the first time when it released and it made no sense. I'm watching it right now on Netflix and it still makes no sense. But I'm still amazed at how beautiful her mother and the rest of the movie. I don't understand. I've watched HMC and it made sense. But not this. I don't get why her sisters turn into water fish things, or why her dad drops elixirs in the water, or when he drank that one elixir he looked younger. Gah! Someone explain me the plot w/ details!
