LYRICS:
"What Are You Doing New Year's Eve"
When the bells all ring and the horns all blow
And the couples we know are fondly kissing.
Will I be with you or will I be among the missing?
Maybe it's much too early in the game
Ooh, but I thought I'd ask you just the same
What are you doing New Year's
New Year's eve?
Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight
When it's exactly twelve o'clock that night
Welcoming in the New Year
New Year's eve
Maybe I'm crazy to suppose
I'd ever be the one you chose
Out of a thousand invitations
You received
Ooh, but in case I stand one little chance
Here comes the jackpot question in advance:
What are you doing New Year's
New Year's Eve?
The Lawrence Welk Show is an American televised musical variety show hosted by big band leader Lawrence Welk. The series aired locally in Los Angeles for four years (1951--55), then nationally for another 271⁄2 years via the ABC network (1955--71) and first-run syndication (1971--82). The Lawrence Welk Show started in 1951 as a local program on KTLA-TV in Los Angeles, California. The original show was broadcast from the since-demolished Aragon Ballroom at Venice Beach. The show made its national TV debut on July 2, 1955, and was produced at the Hollywood Palladium for 23 of its 27 years on the air. The only seasons not taped there were 1965-66, 1976-77 at the Hollywood Palace and CBS Television City from 1977 to 1979. The show aired on ABC until 1971. When the show was canceled by the head of programming there, Welk formed his own production company and continued airing the show, on independent stations and, often during non-prime time, also on some of the ABC affiliates on which he had previously appeared as well as some stations affiliated with other networks. The syndicated version of the program aired from 1971 to 1982.
The Lennon Sisters are an American singing group consisting of four siblings: Dianne (born December 1, 1939), Peggy (born April 8, 1941), Kathy (born August 2, 1943), and Janet (born June 15, 1946). They were all born in Los Angeles, California of German/Irish and Mexican ancestry. The original quartet were the eldest four in a family of twelve siblings. In 1992, younger sister Mimi replaced second sister Peggy who retired. Sister Dianne (DeeDee) has also retired. The group were a regular on the weekly television show, The Lawrence Welk Show. The current group line-up, appearing mostly at Welk resorts, consists of Mimi, Janet and Kathy. Younger brothers Kipp & Pat make up part of the band Venice along with two cousins Michael and Mark. The quartet debuted on The Lawrence Welk Show on Christmas Eve 1955 after their school classmate, Larry Welk, son of Lawrence Welk, brought them to the attention of his father. Welk was home, sick in bed, when his son brought the sisters in to sing for him. He was so impressed he picked up the phone and booked them for that week's show. They were a mainstay on the show until they left to start a career of their own in 1968. The quartet was only three members from 1960 to 1964; oldest sister Dianne (also called Dee Dee) married, left the group, and then rejoined them. Peggy sang the high harmony part, Kathy the low harmony, and Janet and Dianne sang the middle harmony and lead parts.
Steve Smith was born and raised in San Francisco, California; he graduated from San Lorenzo High School and attended Westmont College where he met fellow Westmont students Bob Duncan, Greg Dixon and Johnny Johnson. The foursome sang all over campus as a quartet, which in 1965, drew the attention of bandleader Lawrence Welk. They were at the Hollywood Palladium watching Welk's music makers perform when they got the chance to audition for Welk. The Blenders, with Smith singing lead tenor, joined the show later that year and were a popular fixture of the Musical Family until they broke up in 1967. Smith stayed on as a featured vocalist, and in addition to solo numbers, sang a both part of a barber shop quartet, and as lead vocals in the Curt Ramsey Quintet. He left the show in 1969 to pursue a solo career of his own, which included stints on The Carol Burnett Show and as part of the 1950s group The Diamonds. Today, Smith and his wife Hope live in the Lake Tahoe valley, where they operate a ski resort, while he still pursues singing.
