I spent a month in Pune (Poona), India from late December 08 to late January 09. While there, I was introduced to many incredibly wonderful people, some of whom were also fantastic musicians. One of them was Bikram Singh, a highly-skilled bansuri player well-know in India as well as the the rest of the musical world. He recorded two well-received CDs together with Manish Vyas (tabla and Santoor) under the name Mandala (Healing Ragas & Healing Ragas II), was New Age artist Shastro's flute teacher, and has played on upwards of 150 CDs including those by artists such as Karunesh. Bikram was giving bansuri lessons to a lovely fellow named Himanshu whom I'd just met. When he arrived at Himanshu's house - which, by the way, was exquisite - I showed him my Native American flutes. As I played my High Spirits Merlin C flute, he followed everything I did EXACTLY and EFFORTLESSLY... Later, I watched him teach some ancient ragas to my new friend for well over an hour, and I was completely enthralled with the beautiful sounds they produced. Bikram is exceptional! I'll post one of those ragas soon. In the meantime, please enjoy this little snippet from Pune, India.
