@komodoman Quality is rarely honoured in Eurovision that is so damn right. This song was just to out of Eurovision and too complex too be appreciated as equally as all the other "into-your-face" more upbeat catchy tunes. And being squized into 3 minutes makes it sound very "incomplete..." Underrated and so missunderstood.
It was just too good, back then in the 80s (maybe even today) quality is not honoured at Eurovision, it fell between the easy up-tempo pop drivel party people prefered then...
I think that the live performance at that year's ESC suffered a lot because the whole sound works in studio recording. When played live something gets lost and doesn't work. This arrangement isn't fit to be playted live but again this is how the song really is and it had to be played like that. I can easily see this is a stripped piano voice rearrangement with some vocal chances here and there and more enphasis on the simplicity so that it could be trully give a new life in a live performance.
There is no flaw in this song except it wasn't made for Eurovision. Certain songs and styles back then weren't still very much appreciated and understood. This song goes beyond the "commerical and catchy" aspect that crossovered the majority of the typical ESC songs like even today (but for me today is even worse). This is the negative aspect of ESC unable to recognize this type of muscial craft and achievement. But in 3 minutes is hard to prove anything with the people voting now.
Bravo Joseph ! Cette chanson n'a pas pris une ride ... qualité oblige ...

Quirky and etheral. Therefore it had to fail at ESC. Shame because I love the haunting melody.
