robbie robertson wrote "The Weight" and the Band's version is at the top.

I bought this 45 when it charted in 1968. Back then I thought she was a black soul singer. I have always preferred Jackie DeShannon's version. I didn't hear the version by the band until many years later and thought it was a rip off. And that is why I never cared for The Band. Still love the Jackie version. Thanks for posting it.

Although The Band's version is superb, you should check out the Grateful Dead. They have done beautiful covers of this tune. As far as this version goes, you are right on but I give Jackie props for trying something different. I actually think it could work if done a little bit differently. I feel a lot of her stuff falls into that category. She appears to have been searching for her 'voice' her entire career but never quite found it. It's a shame because she was such a great singer.

Be for getting down there Jackie. A fine rendition of a great song. Can I hear an Amen.? Yes

@catWmagick PS: Jackie DeShannon was never country

@catWmagick don't be silly... a song is a raw thing... each musician gives it a life

@DeShannoninmyheart That's the reason I like Levon. He's not afraid to be rootsy and proud of it. However, I will say this about Jackie. She's alright.
This is crap only The Band can sing this with any substance. It is not meant to be a country song-Gawd!

@catWmagick I've never liked Levon Helm's voice. It's like "look what a rootsy voice I've got" and then he sounds like a sheep. Sorry, but that's the way I feel.
