It was a relaxing Wednesday (Aug. 17) when Buddy first came into my life. I was playing Final Fantasy 13 when my cat started howling out the window. Upon peering through the glass, I saw something that changed my life. There, standing next to a decrepit car, sat Buddy the Groundhog. His grace, his poise and his ability to tell good jokes were immediately noticed.
It had only been a short time before that a family friend (we'll call her "Sarah" for now) said the following as she arrived at our house one day.
"THERE'S A BADGER OUT THERE!" Sarah said.
Since that time, I had been on the lookout for said badger and was instead treated to Buddy.
Over the course of the next week, Buddy and I would see each other in the front yard. One day, I watched him run across the road and into our yard. Since the grass hadn't been mowed, he thought he could hide from me. After snapping some photos, I let Buddy reach his destination: underneath the neighbor's porch.
I didn't see Buddy for a few days, but everything changed when Alicia and I prepared to leave for a trip. There was Buddy, on his back, dead in the road. He looked so peaceful, as though he'd been held by the arms of angels.
Buddy will be remembered for his ability to make children laugh, his ability to hit a top rope leg drop from 20 feet out and his endearing smile.
We'll miss you, Buddy.
