So much of the poignancy of this for me comes from the idea of the difficulty for a man to express homosexual desire (at the time she choreographed this). Here he is using the pre-existing heterosexual expression of desire (the woman's voice singing this song) and is trying to find a way to translate that into his own body. He is interpreting the desire found in the song into a new language that is his own. Yet he stands so still in a suit, his movements so restrained...
