This is my interpretation and translation of the very last song compiled in Tagore's Gitabitan: "aa.Ndhaar shakoli dekhi tomaare dekhinaa jabe." Some viewers may argue that this, rather unfamiliar, song is in reality a hymn to the Almighty. I do not deny this viewpoint. After all, the goddess Hecate was long worshipped by the ancient Greeks, and her mortal incarnation as Kadambori Devi had haunted Tagore's imagination throughout his entire life. Ergo, the title of my translation is: "Homage to Hecate".

The haunting solemnity of the lyric is aptly amplified by Tagore's melodic composition in raga Kanhara, sung to the beat of AaraTheka tala.

I have been requested to post the transliterated lyrics here as well:

aaNdhaaro shakoli dekhi tomaare dekhi naa jabe.
chhalanaa chaaturi aashe hridaye bishaado-baashe
tomaare dekhinaa jabe, tomaare dekhinaa jabe.
esho esho, premomayo, amrito-hashiTi loye.
esho mor kaachhe dhire ei hridayo-nilaye.
chhaaribo naa tomaay kabhu janame marame aar,
tomaay raakhiyaa hride jaaibo bhabero paar.

  • This is Tagore at his finest - I am touched to my marrow. What keeps one alive, what joys of the heart are always kept inside? What touch, though rare, one carried in the soul, forever? Tagore gives a glimpse of those jewels of the human soul here. I had not heard this one before I saw this. Thank you - it is a great post.

  • Yes, I agree Driti1. This particular song recital is so haunting that it brings Kadambori once again to life! I for one, have fallen in love with her long departed soul too! :)

See my video on "The First Sorrow" as well.
