A male elephant calf born on Friday bolsters the population of African elephants at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park to 12.

The unnamed calf was born at 3:16 a.m. to Umngani (oom-gah-knee), a name that means "friend" in the SiSwati language. The mother and calf will be slowly introduced to the rest of the herd over the next several days. Keepers and researchers are monitoring the pair to ensure Umngani properly cares for the newborn and to gather important information about calf development.

  • Poor baby, to know that he will never be free, enjoying the wild like this parents had, during their youth in Swaziland, however brief it was. Humans are multiplying exponentially, & yet they blame these majestic animals for "destroying" the environment, when in truth elephants from Africa to Asia have gone down over 90% only the last 150 years, due almost exclusively to mankind killing them & taking all the fertile lands. Now, they are kept in 200x300sq.ft cells their whole lives.

  • Beautiful baby!

  • I am planning a trip to the Park in March.

Is it possible that any of the three baby elephants that are due n 2009 will be born by then?

  • Congratulations

On a related note, when does the park plan to open the tram tour for the Asian enclosures?

  • Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Cute....

  • Oh my god! How amazing! I hope the live cam starts focusing on this little guy! I'll try my best to see him soon.
