It took just 30 seconds for the Guelph Gryphons to open the scoring against the Ryerson Rams men's hockey team, part of a first period that saw Guelph outscore the Rams 4-1 en route to their 8-2 blowout win.

The Gryphons dominated special teams play, scoring three goals with the man advantage on six opportunities and adding a shorthanded marker in the third period.

Guelph scored their first goal 30 seconds into the game when Zach Lillie (Bracebridge, Ont.) was hauled down by a Ryerson defender on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. Lillie made no mistake, beating Rams goalie Louie George (Waterloo, Ont.) on the backhand to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead.

The Rams managed to tie the game just three minutes later when Matt Rehman capitalized on a Guelph turnover. After the Gryphons killed off a penalty where they had the best scoring opportunity, they turned the puck over in their own end and Rehman broke in on goalie Scott VanBommell (Norwich, Ont.) and beat him on the backhand to even the score. Scott Madden (Barrie, Ont.) and Myles Gomes (Newmarket, Ont.) assisted on Rehman's goal.

Midway through the first Guelph retook the lead off of a John-Thomas MacDonald goal. On the play, George made the initial save off a Nathan Martine (Port Colborne, Ont.) shot but couldn't find the puck. MacDonald (Niagara Falls, Ont.) found the puck and put it into the open net, making the score 2-1. Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill, Ont.) picked up the second assist on the goal.

The Gryphons scored their third of the game 13 minutes into the period on the powerplay. Three Guelph forwards broke into Ryerson's end and after a nice tic-tac-toe passing play, Timothy Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) one-timed the puck past George. Martine picked up his second assist of the game on the play.

With less than one minute to play in the period, Guelph struck again. The Rams were applying a lot of offensive pressure, with Cory Konecny (Stoney Point, Ont.) and Myles Barbieri (Kleinburg, Ont.) both providing decent scoring chances, before Ryerson got caught in Guelph's end and the Gryphons broke out on a three on one. Kris Belan (Florence, Ont.) opted to keep the puck and shoot, beating George top shelf. Edward Gale (Keswick, Ont.) and Kiriakou assisted on the goal.

Ryerson came out and played much better in the second period. The Rams would pull to within two when Andrew Buck (Newmarket, Ont.) picked up the puck after a Guelph turnover at their own blue line, and walked in all alone, beating VanBommell top shelf.

VanBommell was solid for Guelph throughout the second period, making sure the Rams never got closer than two goals.

The Gryphons took the momentum back to start the third period after Ryerson took three straight penalties, and scored four unanswered goals to seal the victory.

Guelph dominated special teams play all game going 3-6 on the powerplay while Ryerson continued to struggle with the man advantage, going 0-7 and giving up a shorthanded goal. The Gryphons also out-shot the Rams, 41-31.

Rams head coach Graham Wise was disappointed that his team didn't get up for a game where a win would have meant a winning record for Ryerson.

"Didn't come ready to play," said Wise of his team. "When you're not ready to play, those things happen." Wise added that he hopes this game will serve as a wake up call for his team.

The loss drops Ryerson to below .500 with a record of 6-7-1. With the win, Guelph's fourth in a row, the Gryphons improve to 6-5-2.

The Rams are in action next weekend when they host Concordia and Carleton.
