TOKYO — Activities marking the opening of Oman Cultural Days in Tokyo began here yesterday under the auspices of Princess Takamado in the presence of Salim bin Mohammed al Mahrooqi, Under-Secretary of Heritage and Culture Ministry, and Khalid bin Hashel al Maslahi, the Sultanate's Ambassador to Japan. The events, which last till December 26, coincide with the Sultanate's celebrations of the 40th National Day.
Princess Takamado greeted His Majesty Sultan Qaboos on the 40th National Day. She lauded the Sultan Qaboos Chair for Middle East Studies launched recently at Tokyo University. She expressed pride to host such events that, she said, depict the Omani cultural and historical features. Al Mahrooqi stressed that the Sultanate and Japan share a conviction in the importance of heritage and cultural identity of peoples. He explained that the Oman Cultural Days in Tokyo emphasises the Sultanate's keenness to reinforce bilateral ties.
He pointed out that contacts with Japan indicate interest in the country's rich culture and civilisation that represent a distinguished model of excellence between the ancient traditions, modernity, development and advancement. Meanwhile, Al Maslahi said that these cultural days come as activation to the joint announcement of the Omani and Japanese governments issued during the visit of His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tareq al Said, Minister of Heritage and Culture, to Japan in April 2008. He pointed out that the Sultanate's embassy is celebrating the inauguration of the publishing in Japanese language of the book Reformer on the Throne: Qaboos bin Said — Sultan of Oman written by Russian author Sergei Plekhanov. The book is an important addition to the Japanese political library in terms of defining the conception of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and His Majesty's care of the country's traditions and cultural heritage.
Al Maslahi added that continuous efforts have resulted in promoting cultural exchange between the two friendly countries. The Sultanate's embassy has hosted since the establishment of the new premises in July 2009, several events and seminars aimed at spreading awareness among Japanese people about the Sultanate, its history and present, indicating that His Majesty's Chair for the Middle East Studies in Tokyo University established last October aims at encouraging scientific and cultural exchange between the two countries.
Then, Princess Takamoda inaugurated exhibitions being held on the sidelines of the Omani cultural days in Tokyo and toured the sections of the exhibitions. The exhibitions include Oman Exhibition (codenamed "Originality and Modernity") that provides a true image of Oman's culture and the development made during the forty years of the blessed Renaissance. The Maquette Exhibition features replicas of Omani castles and forts, as well as Omani ancient ships, such as the Sultanah and Oman.
The Scripts Exhibition showcases ancient manuscripts carrying various forms of science. The Omani Traditions pavilion depicts facts about Oman's non-material cultural heritage. The Cultural Bridge Pavilion (Muscat — Tokyo) presents Omani cultural collection and other Japanese collection focusing on graphic culture concerning font writing, written discourse, as well as calligraphy, sculptures, woodworks and decorations. The Omani Fashion Exhibition showcases costumes of men and women from different governorates and regions.
The Omani Publications Exhibition features a large number of publications of the Heritage and Culture Ministry, the Information Ministry, the Tourism Ministry and other titles that highlight the relations between the Sultanate and Japan in Arabic, English and Japanese languages. The Cultural Acquaintance and Similarity Exhibition offers open channels of dialogue between Omani and Japanese intellectuals.
The ceremony was attended by Yasuo Fakuda, former Japanese prime minister, Seshiro Eto, Deputy Speaker of the Japanese House Representatives and chairman of Omani-Japanese Parliamentary Friendship Association (OJPFA), a number of Arab ambassadors, diplomats, intellectuals, media persons and those who are concerned with the cultural affairs in addition to members of the Japanese public. — ONA
