On November 3rd, 2007, 60 judges of Pakistan -- including the Chief Justice -- were forcibly removed and placed under house arrest by General (retired) Mushrraf. This was an unprecedented attack on the judiciary, even by the standard of our dictators. Equally unprecedented has been the continued struggle of lawyers, journalists, students, and other civil society actors against Musharraf's atrocious emergency measures, which remain in place even as a "transition to democracy" has been claimed.
An independent judiciary where judges have the security of tenure is essential for the functioning of any democracy. "Parliament cannot be established on the debris of the judiciary." (Aitzaz Ahsan, the Supreme Court Bar Association President leading the lawyers' movement).
We urge all of you to lend your voice to this important struggle, by participating in, and promoting this passive protest.
