BOTTOM OF THE WORLD
- Journey to the center of Antarctica -
is the amazing story of an incredible journey of three of the funniest characters you'll ever get to meet in the exploration world.
With next to no outdoor experience,
they certainly did not know how to erect a tent,
Henry Cookson and his team mates Rory Sweet and Rupert Longsdon and renowned polar guide Paul the Jedi Landry, will attempt to be the first people to reach the Pole of Inaccessibility, exact centre of the Antarctic continent, the point furthest from the oceans and probably the coldest and most remote point on our planet, something that has never been attempted before by manhauling and kite ski.
Having found a sponsor and with Henry dedicating 14 months to its planning, in Nov 2006, Team N2i as they were now know headed south for our proposed 1100 mile odyssey.
The uniqueness of the POI is many fold, unlike the South Pole which has been reached by over 180 people, no one had ever been to this remote point under their own steam. It is considerably colder, higher, further and more remote than the South Pole hence no previous attempts at it.
In fact it is so remote its out of range of direct aircraft pick up.
The Poles only previous visitors was a Soviet Tracked Vehicle Expedition back in 1958 that took 2 years to reach this point.
The team is not new to crazy challenges.
Henry and his team mates Rory and Rupert entered the 2005 Scott Dunn Polar Challenge, a 360 mile race across the frozen Arctic Ocean to the Magnetic North Pole.
Pitted against tough opposition, curious polar bears, sub zero temperatures and ridicule from the other contestants and race organisers,
Team Hardware.com, as they were collectively known, not only went and won the race but set a new record that still stands to this day!
