I didn't really seem to understand that line. I'm thinking that perhaps it's a reference to the fact that Inferno (as in The Divine Comedy's Inferno) was Aligheri's vision of hell...

I don't know. The story gets a bit odd at that point, as it seems as though Dante lost all memory of his encounter with the Reaper and we don't find this out until Lucifer shows him. I think the developers just got a bit lazy towards the end.
