Tour de France 2001

clips from our trip to l'Alpe d'Huez during the 2001 Tour de France. Lance had already won the previous two tours but there were still few Americans on the mountain.

We stayed in Grenoble and woke up early for the drive to the mountain. Picked up a hitchhiker to help us find our way but he turned out to be a tourist too and had no idea where it was.

The gendarme closed the road to traffic shortly after we found it. We parked just above turn 6.

The Dutch are certainly the most animated. They brought their own sound system and DJ and plenty of beer as well.

This video is more about our experience of the Tour de France and my love of cycling. I am not specifically a Lance fan. I was sure happy an American won, though. On the way down l'Aple d'Huez other spectators were very gracious and cheered our car when they saw our flag.

I hope anyone who wants to see the Tour in person will go. It was a challenge to 1) communicate 2) find l'Alpe d'Huez 3) find a spot to park and view and 4) survive a day in the middle of nowhere, but my wife agrees, it was an amazing experience.
