The late but very great, Pierre Cochereau (1924-1984) improvising at HIS instrument in Notre Dame. There is not much you can say about him that hasn't already been said. Dupré said he was the greatest improviser of the 20th century, but his work as a teacher and director of the conservatories at Le Mans, Nice and Lyon have also left a considerable legacy.

This recording was transferred to CD from Disques du Solstice especially to accompany a very impressive book called 'Les orgues des Cathedrales de France' by Philippe Cicchero, and as far as I know is not commercially available elsewhere. So to many of your devoted Cochereau fans, this might be a previously unheard improv, hope you like it :-).

Its in three movements, I have had to edit the single track CD into the three movements, its all unmistakable Cochereau, there never was, and never will be anyone quite like him. The slow build up in the first movement, the gentle, lilting second movement and the furious and joyous final.

Another Cochereau improvisation that most of you have never heard recorded in Hungary will be coming soon!

  • I've never heard of this book...

  • I never used to like Cochereau's impro's or written pieces but after hearing him play Messiaens Dieu Parmi Nous.....well......nothing else to be said.......

  • I really don't get how anybody couldn't love Cochereau, yet I've found, much to my surprise and dismay, there are people that cannot stand him, I do not get it! He's always been my favorite organist!

  • I got mine through the Organ Historical Society in Richmond, VA (check their web site)

  • I'd like to get a copy as well - dread to think the price though, but I'm sure it's worth it. Wonder if Waterstones sell it???

  • I am about to get it, I think amazon still sells it. It would wort buying it. Thanks for the ISBN number thoght.

  • Great work, as usual. I bought the Cicchero book a couple of years ago. It took about a year after I ordered it to finally get it -- & it didn't have any CD enclosed !! Thanks for letting me catch up on what I missed.

  • Great Thank you! !
