http://www.pbs.org/moyers This week PBS' Bill Moyers Journal travels to ground zero of the mortgage meltdown—Cleveland, Ohio. Correspondent Rick Karr takes viewers to Slavic Village, one of the hardest hit neighborhoods in the nation when it comes to the spate of foreclosures caused by the subprime mortgage crisis. There, more than 1,000 homes stand vacant and decaying in a neighborhood that once thrived with families living the American dream of home ownership. Moyers gets perspective from veteran journalist William Greider on the current financial crisis and what he calls "the great deflation of Wall Street."

Airs Friday, July 18, at 9p.m. on PBS (check local listings). For more: http://www.pbs.org/moyers

  • so why did we bail them out ?

  • lglg69 its called buy low sell highthe banks are gonna make a killing literially they call this a recession but its really a depression i've never seen so many homeless people in my life until now the question is when are americans gonna wake the hell up an say enough is enough!

  • "The banks are robbing the people" is so true. Where we live there are foreclosures popping up and our home value has plummeted. We too our thinking if it's really worth it to keep this fast depreciating home. The banks are retarded anyway, you'd think they'd want to redo the mortgages so people can afford them, but that makes too much sense.

  • Sense you say you know! Then why are Henge fund brokers being made scape goats, I for one do enjoy taking profits from bears stock at 2.15 & resell at 11.00, now ncc was 3.38

There is money in all markets

  • Personal responsibility of individuals has gone down the drain. Leave it up to the "fe=ree-loaders" to take advantage of the system that other free-loaders felt the poor deprived needed and wah-freakin-lah, they gave, the so called deprived took and now it's the "systems" fault.

Only in the good Ol U.S do we still tend to handout and ask nothing for it, that would be descrimination!

    Oldhat

  • I'm an appraiser and I am one of those in the know of how it has happen and how it was planned and what dynamics took place to get into this mess.

  • Love the rating system they've incorporated. Don't like dissenting opinions? Rate them into obliviion! That's PURE democracy right there: the Masses of Asses stampeding over the thinking minority.

That aside, our economic "crisis" (I'm told that the Chinese character for that word is a combination of the characters for "danger" and "OPPORTUNITY") will ultimately lead us towards a more viable way of life (I hope). In the past century Western lifestyles have become increasingly unsustainable.

  • Free markets don't have their governments bail them out...

  • For anyone who has not noticed it yet: The economy is falling apart. And the people get the government they deserve.
